Access control that fails safely and gets audited properly

Access control is easy to sell and easy to get wrong, because most of its behaviour only shows up in situations you hope never happen — a power failure, a fire alarm, a departing employee who still has a credential.

Fail-safe and fail-secure are a life-safety decision

Every controlled door has to do something specific when power is lost, and that decision belongs to the building's fire and egress requirements, not to convenience. A fail-secure lock that stays locked in a power failure is appropriate on some doors and dangerous on others. Designated exits generally need to release. This gets confirmed against the building's requirements before hardware is chosen, because retro-fitting the wrong lock type is expensive and, on the wrong door, genuinely unsafe.

Credentials are only as good as their offboarding

The real value of access control isn't the door opening — it's knowing who has access and being able to revoke it in seconds. That's only true if credentials are issued individually rather than shared, and if there's an actual process for removing someone. Older proximity card technologies can also be cloned trivially with equipment costing very little, which matters more on some sites than others; it's worth an honest conversation rather than an automatic upsell to the newest credential type.

Integration is the point, if the system is chosen for it

Inner Range Inception handles access control and intruder detection together, which means the alarm can arm when the last person badges out, and a door forced at 3am is a single event rather than two systems that don't talk. Integration with CCTV means an access event can be tied to footage of the door at that moment — enormously faster than scrubbing through hours of video looking for an incident.

Door hardware carries the load

Controllers and readers get the attention, but the strike, the closer and the frame do the physical work. An electric strike fitted to a frame that flexes will pass a commissioning test and fail within a year. Where an existing door is not suitable, saying so up front is cheaper than proving it later.

Cables are identified, so the next person to open the cabinet — whether that's us in three years or someone else entirely — can tell what goes where without tracing every run by hand. It costs a few minutes during the install and saves hours later.

A camera position and coverage plan

A site plan showing where each camera sits and what it covers, agreed before anything is installed. It's how the design conversation happens — you can see what you're getting and move a camera on paper rather than after it's on the wall. It stays useful afterwards as a record of what was agreed.

Your credentials, in writing

Admin passwords, app logins and account ownership are yours and are handed over documented. This shouldn't be worth mentioning, but installers withholding credentials to protect their service work is common enough that it's worth being explicit: it's your system, and you'll be able to administer it or hand it to someone else.

A commissioning test record

A record of what was tested and the result — night footage actually reviewed, detectors walk-tested, remote access checked from outside your network. It comes from commissioning industrial plant, where nothing is considered finished until it's been proven under the conditions it has to work in. The same principle applies to a system whose whole job is to work at 2am.

Common questions

Cards, fobs, PIN or phone?

Usually a combination. Fobs suit staff, PINs suit low-security internal doors, and phone credentials suit sites with a lot of turnover because they're issued and revoked remotely. The right mix depends on how many people, how often they change, and how much a lost credential would matter.

What happens in a power failure?

Exactly what the design specifies — which is why it's determined before hardware is selected. Systems are backed up so controlled doors continue to behave correctly, and designated exits release in line with the building's egress requirements.

Can it work with our existing alarm and cameras?

Sometimes. It depends what's installed and whether the equipment exposes usable integration. Where it doesn't, it's better to say so than to promise integration that turns out to be two systems sitting next to each other.

Do you install Integriti?

Not currently — Inception is the Inner Range platform in use today, and it suits small to mid-size sites well. Larger and multi-site Integriti deployments are outside current scope rather than something to take on and learn at your expense.
