Cameras, access control, EFTPOS, cloud software and everyone's phones all share the same network. When it's built as an afterthought, the security system is the first thing to suffer and the last thing anyone suspects.
Segmentation, so one weak device isn't everyone's problem
A camera running firmware from 2019 has no business sitting on the same flat network as your accounts software. VLANs put cameras, staff devices, guests and building systems into separate lanes that can't reach each other except where you decide they should. On a business network that's the single most valuable thing you can do, and it costs nothing but the time to configure it properly.
Managed switches and a PoE budget that adds up
PoE switches have a total power budget as well as a per-port limit, and it's routinely overlooked. A switch that happily runs six cameras will drop the seventh — usually intermittently, usually months later, and usually blamed on the cameras. Sizing that properly at design time is the difference between a system that works and one that develops a mystery.
One controller instead of a drawer of logins
TP-Link Omada and Ubiquiti both put the switches, access points and gateway under a single controller, so VLANs, Wi-Fi networks and firmware are managed in one place rather than device by device. Which platform suits depends on the site, the budget and what's already installed — there's no reason to be religious about it.
Wi-Fi that covers the building, not just the room with the router
Coverage problems are usually placement problems. Access points positioned around how the building is actually used, wired back properly rather than daisy-chained through mesh, with channels and power set deliberately. In a warehouse or a double-brick house that planning matters far more than buying a bigger router.
Homes are simpler, and that's fine
A house rarely needs a rack of managed gear. More often it's a sensible router with the cameras kept separate from everything else, cabling to the places that matter, and coverage that reaches the back of the block. Scaling enterprise equipment down onto a home is a good way to spend money on complexity nobody will maintain.

Labelled cabling
Cables are identified, so the next person to open the cabinet — whether that's us in three years or someone else entirely — can tell what goes where without tracing every run by hand. It costs a few minutes during the install and saves hours later.
A camera position and coverage plan
A site plan showing where each camera sits and what it covers, agreed before anything is installed. It's how the design conversation happens — you can see what you're getting and move a camera on paper rather than after it's on the wall. It stays useful afterwards as a record of what was agreed.
Your credentials, in writing
Admin passwords, app logins and account ownership are yours and are handed over documented. This shouldn't be worth mentioning, but installers withholding credentials to protect their service work is common enough that it's worth being explicit: it's your system, and you'll be able to administer it or hand it to someone else.
A commissioning test record
A record of what was tested and the result — night footage actually reviewed, detectors walk-tested, remote access checked from outside your network. It comes from commissioning industrial plant, where nothing is considered finished until it's been proven under the conditions it has to work in. The same principle applies to a system whose whole job is to work at 2am.
Common questions
Do I need a separate network for my cameras?
On a business site, almost certainly — it's the cheapest security improvement available. At home it's still worth keeping cameras off the same segment as your computers, but it can usually be done within the existing equipment rather than by adding more.
Omada or Ubiquiti?
Either. Both are controller-managed and both do the job well. The choice usually comes down to what's already on site, budget, and whether anything needs to integrate with existing gear.
Can you fix Wi-Fi that doesn't reach the back of the house?
Usually, and often without new hardware. Coverage problems are frequently placement or channel problems rather than a lack of equipment, so it's worth looking before buying.
Do you run the cabling too?
Yes — data cabling for cameras, access points and outlets is part of the same job. Low-voltage work; anything requiring an electrical licence is carried out by licensed electricians.
